SMA are sub-miniature type connectors with screw-style coupling. There are both SMA and RP-SMA type connectors. It is quite common for these to be confused. The SMA male has a pin protruding. However, the RP-SMA male has a center receptacle, thus causing those unfamiliar to be confused. We often use the terms plug for male and jack for female since plug and jack tend to lead to less confusion. SMA connectors are utilized in a broad range of applications.
